Watch the video at this website, then discuss in the following way... http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/rough/2006/09/cubas_art_revol.html#
So, the task is to choose a piece of work that you see in the film. This will be your choice of an image that you will use to “engage the student” in a basic discussion of the “Definition and Purpose of Art.” From the text book reading for the week of chapter 4, you can choose from- Art for Art’s sake, for Society’s sake, the Pluralistic Perspective or Raising Consciousness. Write a single page describing how this particular piece could serve well as the basis for a discussion of the Purpose of Art from one of the perspectives listed above. And certainly, if what you see in this assigned video piece does nothing for you, describe the thoughts, feelings and values that drive you in another direction. Then tell me about the piece of work you would choose from a different context that would serve the role of engaging students in a discussion of the purpose of art.
For my discussion i will choose the fallen lighthouse. i would be looking at this through a societies sake and pointing out to the chilren how the lighthouse resembles cuba and how it is suppossed to be strong and mighty, but when it is fallen, it is weak and vulnerable and broken. this shows the society just how cuba may be looked at byu others or even by its people. maybe it is how its people looks at its government and talk about different meanings it might have to different people and why.
I think, if you were to use this piece in the classroom, it would have to be older students, who can understand metaphors. Younger children might not be able to comprehend the true meaning behind the fallen lighthouse unless you REALLY explained it well. :-) That's the only reason I didn't pick this piece to write about.
today cuba is known for its politics and very upbeat hispanic music, unfortunatly the less know object of cuba is visual arts. I think it would be really fun and interesting to visit old havana, i dont think i could narrow down which art piece i would like the best there are so many choices and so many great pieces. they mostly sell their works to tourists, i think we buy them because they are so interesting to us, the art that represents their country is so much different than art that represents ours. famous artists their live very lavishly. they took everythring around them like marble and wood to create art in submersive and simple ways. they used the light house as a symbolic message. they had the lighthouse fallen down and on its side in the display but its not supposed to seen as weak. its supposed to be seen as solid, although it is fallen it is still all in one peice. it seem like a very rough place to live but with education and a trade you might be able to make a decent life their. very interesting video, i want to go their now!
I find it strange how doctors get paid less than artists in cuba.....its the complete opposite here! this could be a good topic to discuss in a class. I wrote my paper on the 'S 's I think it reflects how materialistic societies can be
